Website on Mobiles – Menus

It appears there’s a ‘glitch’ with the yellow subscriber bar at the top of the main screen. On a mobile device you cannot access the menus (3 bars) on the top left. This is why the scorecard, league table and other buttons are there but on a mobile they appear at the bottom of the entire page (I’ve tried pushing them to the top, ain’t happening).  On a desktop they are just on the top left!

The alternatives are:

  1. Stick an email address in and subscribe. ATM the mailchimp email system isn’t working anyway! 🙁 This allows the site menu to be activated.
  2. Switch your mobile browser to Desktop site or desktop mode using its own menu/settings. This allows the full site menu to appear

We are in discussions with a new web developer (£££) to revamp the site so if you have ideas on how to improve it just email us. What would YOU like to see?
Alternatively, if you can develop in PHP/MySQL/Wordpress and want to get involved voluntarily and save the league some money also get in touch by email!

Thanks again for your support and patience,

Blast from the past – 1982

I received an email in April from the retiring Bampton Aunt Sally league Secretary/Treasurer….

Hi Paul, trust all is well.

Just ‘clearing out the cupboard’ on retiring after my 20 year stint as Bampton Secretary (!)

Found something that originated from our founder Bob Watts.

Looks like he visited your ‘Grand Finals & Dance’ in 1982 and brought back a programme.

8 pages with a nice welcome message from Basil.

Thought you might like it for your archive collection, so let me have a postal address & I’ll forward it.

Regards

So I duly obliged and Barry sent through the 1982 programme the front cover is now in our Old Programmes page.
Needless to say I’m sure Bampton has given Barry a good thank you and send off after his 20 years of service to the game and we wish him well.

In those days Finals Night at the Abbey Hall Abingdon, started at 6:45pm and went with the finals of Eights, Stewards, Doubles, Landlords & Landladys, Secretaries, Fours, Captains, Red Drive (3s), Tom Simmons and Singles.

Hale Horse&Harrow 102, F: C Vince 3 Horse Shoes 113, G: M Foster White Hart 93 and H: K Atkinson George&Dragon 98. It also appears this was the start of the Top Dolls trophies with polished dolls instigated (some of which are now missing – so if you see one please return!)

Good to see at least some of these venues continuing the tradition, some of which have long gone of course.

No admission after 10pm and the band played until midnight! The committee consisted of no less than 9 members (no positions listed) and a separate ‘disputes’ committee of 5!

You may or may not have been around in 1982, for me most notable event was the Falklands War, not because I took part but because of the impact locally in Weymouth/Portland where I lived. One of my school classmates had a younger brother who I mistook for him in a club (it was darkish!). He told me his brother was in the Royal Marines and off to the fight at 20 years old. I never found out whether he’d brought back the ‘souvenir’ he said he was going to for his brother. He was one of the naughtier kids at school.

In case you missed 1982 here’s what the t’internet says and it was the birth of 🙂 and Channel 4 (making live TV have 4 channels!) :-

1982 is widely recognized as a “golden year” for pop culture, particularly in film and music, while simultaneously being a year of significant geopolitical conflict and technological transition. It was the year Thriller was released, E.T. broke box office records, the Commodore 64 arrived, and the Falklands War took place.
Here is what made 1982 special:
1. A Monumental Year for Cinema (The “Nerdiest” Year)
Often cited as one of the best years in movie history, 1982 saw the release of several iconic science fiction and fantasy films that defined a generation:
    • E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial: Became the highest-grossing film of all time, dethroning Star Wars.
    • Blade Runner: Released to theaters, cementing its status as a cyberpunk masterpiece.
    • Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan: Widely considered the best of the franchise.
    • The Thing & Poltergeist: Seminal horror films released during the summer.
    • TRON: Pioneered computer-generated special effects.

2. A Music Industry Paradigm Shift
    • Michael Jackson’s Thriller: Released on November 30, 1982, it went on to become the best-selling album of all time, redefining music videos and pop music.
    • “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash: Released, pushing rap from party novelty into social commentary.
    • MTV’s Rise: MTV began influencing hits, helping acts like The Go-Go’s become the first all-female band to write their own songs and reach #1 on the Billboard album chart.

3. Key Technological Advances
    • The CD Player: Sony introduced the world’s first commercial Compact Disc player (CDP-101).
    • Commodore 64: Released in 1982, it became one of the best-selling home computer models of all time.
    • First Computer Virus: The “Elk Cloner” virus was created, the first to infect Apple II PCs.
    • Digital Emoticons: Scott Fahlman proposed the use of :-) and :-( for communication.

4. Significant Global Events
    • The Falklands War: A 74-day conflict between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands, taking place from April to June.
    • Israel Invades Lebanon: The 1982 Lebanon War began in June.
    • Canada’s Independence: The Canada Act 1982 was passed, officially patriating the Canadian constitution.
    • First Artificial Heart: Barney Clark became the first recipient of a permanent artificial heart.

5. Pop Culture and Trends
    • Diet Coke: Unveiled by Coca-Cola, becoming a mainstay in soft drinks.
    • Pac-Man: The fever reached its peak, with Hanna-Barbera releasing a Pac-Man cartoon in the fall.
    • Toys: Care Bears and G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero launched in 1982.
    • UK Milestone: Channel 4 started broadcasting.
    • Prince William: Born on June 21, 1982.

In summary, 1982 marked a “switch” where the remnants of the 1970s ended, and the high-tech, block-buster, music-video-driven 1980s truly began.

Week I results round up

Well, as is quite commonplace the first week of the Summer season proved to be probably the coldest evening of the week and that was reflected in much of the scoring on the night! It was certainly a night to bring out the winter coats again rather than t shirts and shorts!

It was not the best of welcomes for many of our “newcomers” or returners although The Black Horse B got off to a 5-1 winning start in Section F as did Oxford RFC 6-0 victors against The Plough, Appleton. The Old Anchor and The Seven Stars shared the spoils in their opening fixture.

Despite the overall low scoring and the absence of any “sixers” on the night there were lots who came close with 5 stick legs including Jason Bowler (Ab Utd A), Wayne Waldron (Wads A), Robert Glen (Stanford FC), John Webster (The Fox, D’worth), And Ash Wheeler (Waggon & Horses).

There were lots of double digit doll scorers as well, topping the list with 12 dolls was Geoff Lee with 12 dolls,  11 dolls apiece were scored by  Dean Bowler (Red Lion A) Richard Jones and Stuat Wilson (Berinsfield SC A) and Terry Downes (Plum Pudding), Dave Kidd, (Waggon & Horses) and 10 dolls were hit by Nick Baldwin (Stev. Sports SC A), Andy Stoter (Grove RFC), Martin Rawlings and Jack Hawkins (Berinsfield SC A),Dan Foulks (WADS A) and Kevin Sanders (The Plough W Hanney).

Team Performances of the night probably were Berinsfiedd SC A who beat the Plum Pudding in the Premier Section 5-1 with a total of 77 dolls and 4 of their 8 all contributing 10 or more dolls. The Plum Pudding played their part with  67 dolls which, in any other fixture on the night would have been a match winning score! Also we can’t fail to mention the Red Lion A whose 6-0 win over long standing Premier League champions Abingdon Con Club who without some recently departed team members and the absence of recuperating Phil Adams managed only a disappointing 40 dolls. I have to give a once in a season mention to Dave Dix who for the first (and probably what will be the only time this season) did not hit double figures on the night and is not therefore leading the individual doll average. I doubt that will last very long either!!

Former Con Club players father and son Nick and Tom Baldwin together with Scott Humphries all helped Steventon Sports SC A to a 4-2 win over A section newcomers The Wheatsheaf in the A section

Overall last week of  the 31 matches played a total of 17 legs saw scores recorded of 20 or more, 65 legs failed to reach double figures and of those 31 matches played 25 were won and 6 were drawn. 71 dolls scored by Berinsfield  A was the highest total dolls scored in 3 legs and 16 dolls produced a 5-1 win in one match!

Finally, thank you to all who managed to input their scores online and for doing it so promptly. Just a reminder it is the winning sides responsibility to post results NOT the home team’s although both sides should check to make sure the scores are on the doors! We are aware that some teams struggled to post their scores due to accessing the website difficulties. Ewe will try and sort those problems out for the coming week, but if you do have continue to have issues just let me have  a copy of the match card and I will input for you until you are able to gain access.

Let’s all hope for a bit more warmth this week as I am sure the cold must have contributed to some of last week’s low scoring!! Most of all enjoy week 2 of our summer season whatever the weather!
