2026 Competitions

Last Sunday Abingdon United hosted 3 of our  Open Competitions, the Singles, Pairs and Captains and Secretaries which, this year, because of a failure to attract the minimum entry (8) for each category  the Committee chose  to consolidate all entries into one competition, a joint Captains & Secretaries Competition.

Only 8 of our 66 teams were represented despite all the Competitions being open to all registered teams that once again was a little disappointing. From the 8 teams entered 4 of those were from the  Premier section, 2 were from the B section, 1 from the D section and our late,  late plea for more entries enticed the Black Swan from the G section to enter all 3 competitions. We were particularly grateful to all teams who entered and all of those who actually showed on the day, there were, from memory , only 3 no shows from the expected entries. So we had over 30 players taking part on  a very warm, sunny afternoon although the the breeze was a little troublesome for some! We used both pitches and that avoided the games going on into the early evening as in the past couple of years We finished a full afternoon’s Aunt Sally at just after 5pm with semi finalists for both the singles and pairs competitions and finalists for the Captains/Secretaries all established. Dave Dix, Paul Barrett, Bob Duff, Steve Enock, Chris Jenkins, Paul Barrett, Terry Downes, Geoff Lee, Ian Mattan and Tony Beechers and Phil Adams are all therefore still in the hunt for titles which will all be decided either on Finals Night on September 16th September (Captains & Secretaries) or for the Singles and Pairs semi finals and Finals which will take place on Presentation Night on Friday October 18th, again at Abingdon United FC

As I have already mentioned only 8 teams were represented on the day and we were particularly grateful to both  Ali and her teammates from the Black Swan and to Steve Fernback Captain of The Fox, Boars Hill for their participation and, importantly encouragment in persuading their team mates to take part.

Thanks also to your Committee Claire, Paul, Geoff and Tosh  (and Alan our honorary member for the day) for all of their efforts and contribution on the day. Thanks also to Vicky who, in addition to her bar duties (alone) also managed to feed all of those of us competing and administering on the day.

Competitions are not over yet, the closing date for the team 3, 4, and 5 competitions remains open unto the end of July as does the lower pairs competitions, the details for this (date and venues) will be on the website next week. Entry forms are already on the website for all of these Competitions and we really do hope these will be well supported particularly as we have set aside 2 additional Wednesdays to stage them so the 3’s, 4’s and 5’s are going to be held on  Aunt Sally
