Competition News: 4s Knockout
Thursday saw the next set of competitions play out at Abingdon Conservative Club and Abingdon United FC in the form of the 4s Knockout.
With just Tandem and Ab.RBL appearing at Ab Utd (losing Steventon Sports & Spread Eagle B(A) ) Legion made short work of a poorly performing Tandem winning 2-1.
At ACC Spread Eagle B(B) failed to field (due to sickness/holidays) and left Spread Eagle to take on Ab.Utd B(A) in the first match.
With four players both teams managed 16 in the first leg with Spread managing all 2’s in the 3 stick leg which Utd couldn’t match. Spread then set 13 which again Utd couldn’t chase putting Spread into the semi final.
Plum Pudding were knocked out 2-0 by Ab.Utd B(B) (scores illustrated).
Semi final between Spread and Ab Utd B(B) had Utd setting 7 which John Simmons getting an impressive 6 to leave Scott Humphries with a simple 2 for the first leg win. Spread set with a 4×4 giving 16 which was no match for an under pressure Utd despite Paul Barrett’s fine 4 start.
4s Final is between Spread Eagle and Ab.RBL to be played on Finals Night Wed 13th Sept at Ab.Utd.
Summer League : Week 10 Results & Comp News

Summer League : Week 9 Results & Comp News
Competition News: A disappointing turnout in the Tom Simmons 5’s Knockout this week with two out of the six teams unable to field teams left only 3 contenders once Spread Eagle B withdrew after a pre-match issue with unsporting behaviour from a player from Spread Eagle. Spread Eagle B lodged a complaint with the Committee and the player’s team Captain/Secretary have been warned that any further behaviour will result in the player being barred from the League. The Committee will decide whether the other semi-final should be rescheduled.
Plum Pudding took on the might of Abingdon Utd B in the Semi-Final to lose 2-0 to putting Utd through.
THIS WEEK : Singles competition – see fixture list for revised venues.
No change to the Over 14s this week but Barry Parker (Ab Utd B) was unlucky with 4-5-4 and unfortunate not to retain his World Title at the Charlbury Beer Festival this year. Next time Barrington.
Aunt Sally and Uncle Sam – some history of the game
In 2015 the then Secretary Graham Brown received an unsolicited email from a chap in the US wanting to use some of the photos from our website. Graham passed the email to me and I corresponded with the chap over a few images and thought nothing further. We get a few emails like this – the last USA one was asking about the specification for a doll (I sent a couple in the post).
A couple of weeks ago the same chap, Rhett Krause of Massachusetts contacted the Chairman for his address as ‘I have something to mail to the League, but need an address.’ James passed the email to me and I immediately recognised the name. Oh. He’s written the leaflet!
Summer League: Week 8 Results & Comp News
Competition News: Eights Final was played at Abingdon Conservative Club this week between Spread Eagle and Ab.Utd. B. Spread’s Scott Humphries had to retire injured which was crucial to Ab.Utd. securing the trophy for 2017 despite missing the top man Dave Dix. First leg drew and Spread secured it on 3 sticks then Utd took the next two legs. Spread 20-18-22 and Ab.Utd.B 20.24.23.
THIS WEEK: – Tom Simmons (5s) trophy matches ALL PLAYED AT Abingdon Conservative Club. See revised competition fixture list online.
One match defaulted this week – no card entered for F Section North Star B vs RAL RecSoc. “Nil point”. Shame.
A special mention to the newest team/pitch in the League – The Ladygrove A of Didcot. I’ve been asked to thank Chris Harrison and Darren ‘you know the rules’ Saunders for their efforts this week. Well done Dan Sheridan for making this happen and even getting the pitch sponsored! Magnificent!
There’s a lady in the house for the over 14s in Janet Morton Waggon & Horses A – well done ! You’ve obviously vastly improved from your early season performance and/or got very fortunate with the knocks! Just shows anyone can put their mind to it.
